Turn Signals

Considering using LED's for Turn Signals?

Turn signal systems require a thermal relay ("flasher") to turn the signal lights on and off in a blinking fashion. This is accomplished by the resistance in the signal circuit generating enough heat to trip the relay in the flasher. While regular light bulbs offer suffiicient resistance to trip a thermal flasher, this is NOT the case with LED's. LED's (Light Emiting Diodes) are solid-state components that emit light when current is present, but LED's are polarized. Since a diode will only allow current to flow in one direction, polarity is important. On a negative ground system you must use negative ground LED's, and a positve ground system requires positive ground LED's.

On a 6-volt system with a thermal flasher, you will need a resistor on each LED to generate enough resistance to "trip" the flasher. On a 12-volt system, an electronic flasher may eliminate the need for resistors, HOWEVER, electronic flashers are sensitive to stray RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) which is often created by ancient ignition systems. The alternative to an electronic flasher is a 12-volt thermal flasher with resistors at each LED.
