The manifold heaters set on top of the exhaust manifold and are open in the front and in the back. The air from the fan blows air across the manifold and into the car. The heater comes with a valve that you attach to the firewall. There is normally a gap between the heater and the valve. You can leave that gap the way it is, or to collect more heat, you can slip a piece of flexible exhaust tubing over the round portion of the valve that sticks through the firewall and run it into the outlet of the heater. Exhaust tubing is something you can pick up at any local parts store.
