I have purchased new cast iron brake drums, how are these installed?
Assemble the hub and drum together using 4 modern hex head bolts, nuts, and washers. Tighten these 4 bolts and nuts so that the hub and drum are drawn together tightly. Now you are going to swedge the hub bolt in place: Insert one of the hub bolts through the hub and drum. Now you must swedge the shoulder of the stud in a hydraulic press which will require about 27 tons of pressure and will require one of the A-1109-T swedging tools. Support the head of the wheel stud in your hydraulic press and slide the swedging tool over the threaded end of the stud. (apply some Crisco shortening to the ID of the swedging tool to ease removal) Now you are ready to swedge the shoulder of the stud. When you swedge the stud, it will cause the shoulder to swell and peen like a rivet in the cavity of the hub and drum. Once you are done with one, remove one of the hex head bolts and nuts you earlier installed and repeat the swedging process. Once you have all 5 swedged, you will need to get your drums turned so they are true to the hub.
